Throughout the build there are always extras you would like to add.
This again is usually down to late ideas within the build and things that have only just come onto the market. I'm always on the look out for things that will help day to day life in and off grid.
The Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 Satellite Phone, I like my gadgets and the price of these have come down considerable over the years. And you never know when you might need it.
These are great for communicating between vehicles locally. Multiple handsets are Ideal for conveys while following and keeping in touch with friends on the road. Kids love them too.
Having cold drinks and snacks in the cab during a hot and dry drive is a great added comfort. So this will be a must install. I'll keep the beers in habitation units fridge for later. Drive sensibly.
This is something I have been looking at for some time. Naturally the truck has massive mirrors and good visibility, but adding extra view cameras at awkward angles may help.
Hydraulic leveling takes the hassle out of having to drive up on blocks or manually jack up. These are the last things you want to do after a hot and sweaty days drive over arduous terrain.
On the move tire inflation is a very handy driving aid that can get you out of situations quickly without having to leave the cab. Ideal in mud and sand situations. Definitely a good idea.
If all electrical systems across the whole vehicle fail, then a Jackery Solor Generator 1000 is a great as a final resort. For charging the mobile or Satellite phone and calling for help.
You wake one morning and your starter batteries are dead. A Lithium based jump starter pack are amazingly small but powerful and can have your engine running in seconds.
I like the idea having a TV projector outside for those odd movie nights among friends while having a cold beer and a burger.
I would like to integrate items more in to 'Alexa' as a central home hub system, from lights to fridges. One day all appliances will have an IP address and will be accessible and controllable.
Being a bit of a techie, the idea of having a touchscreen table PC/Mac would be the ultimate. Just need the price of OLED TV's to come down and that would be my next project.
This I find really interesting as the possibilities
are endless even off grid in a truck. From vehicle security and eventually a driving aid. Needs to get a lot cheaper first.
Definitely a must for the cab roof on the HX60. Adds extra space for storage boxes. I like the Motorcraft version, it looks good and is nicely designed to mount a light bar too.
An extra set of powerful driving lights for the HX. roof rack mounted on the cab is another must. Nothing better than a well lite road or track ahead when the visibility is poor.
Another gadget I'd like is Night vision, complimented with a few extra infrared lights to help lite up the dead of night around the truck.
Here are a few things I'd like to have on my travels if I could find space for them. Maybe my next build with a MAN HX58 6x6 which has more space.
I like the idea of having an automated telescope so I can sit and watch the stars with a cold beer one night no matter where I am in the world. It's a vast space out there and so colourful.
I have always wanted to learn to fly a helicopter, but it so expensive. A powered paraglider would be the closest thing. To flying freely above the sand dunes in Morocco or the coast of Sardinia.
Although I have a 125cc motorbike on the truck, a 4x4 quad is so much more fun. I had a Honda 500cc 4x4 a few years ago and what a beast it was. Bring back my Honda 500!
Being able to sit out on a river or lake and catch dinner would be cool. There's a company called 'Quickboats' that make a collapsible boat with outboard engine perfect for such times.
The idea of having a quick simple inflatable extension to your vehicle while stationery for a week or so seems a great idea, no matter if you need more shade area or dry rain free space.
Being a bit of a techie, the idea of being able to make replacement parts while on the move in the future sounds like science fiction. But it's possible with some of today's 3D printers.
I'm currently looking at spending around 6 months at first with traveling. Then subject to other plans I have for the vehicle in the UK, Europe, Asia and North Africa, I may end up living in it full time.
I have been asked this already by a few interested parties. I think what I would do this possibly build a second identical expedition truck and sell that.
Good question and obviously I've only just started this project. I did originally look at a MAN HX58 6x6 but decided it would be too long. A lot of people have trucks of this length and longer. I might re look at this option if I decide to build another after 'Moosejam'.
I have friends and family in Vancouver and after crossing Canada on a train in the winter some years back I would love the opportunity to drive across Canada. So yes it's on the list. I have the option to alter the Victron system to except 110/ 120 V in. As mentioned I've lived in Australia for some time and have family there too, and that could be a possible future destination.
Yes I will once done together with a list of build hours so it can be compared to a commercial build.
No the MAN D0836 LFG50 Euro 4 6 cylinder 326HP engine in the HX60 is perfectly capable power unit. It will go on for years with regular oil changes. The vehicle it's self is not designed for high speed and it will only increase the wear and tear, not only on the gearbox but brakes and suspension. As they say: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
